Kidney Transplantation: Latest News

Kidney transplantation is the organ transplant of a kidney into a patient with end-stage kidney disease. Although, it is a well-known fact that most people with one kidney live healthy, normal lives with few problems. A single kidney from a very young deceased donor keeps an adult stable with kidney failure. Theoretically, transplantation of all paediatric kidneys into an adult has improved kidney function, and doctors typically do not separate the kidneys while the donor is under five as young donor kidneys are considered to be safe and efficient for transplantation.
But latest studies confirm that single kidney from very young donors when transplanted into adults is found to be safe and effective. Half of adults received single paediatric kidneys from donors under the age of five while the other half acquired single kidneys from donors between five and ten years old. The donor in the study was a nine-month old female, the kidney function of both her donated kidneys improved dramatically in the first year after transplant, and it continued to improve into the third year and remained healthy for more than six years post-transplantation into two different recipients. The study concluded that single paediatric kidney transplants from patients younger than five years of age can be used with reasonable risks and successful long-term results.
